Where We Place Our Trust is Everything

Understanding the difference between TRUST and love is critical. If you’re constantly affected by offenses and unforgiveness, you don’t have a love problem you have a trust problem. The love of God that dwells in us is for everyone. And within it, there’s grace, mercy, forgiveness compassion, etc. But God’s love can only flow from our lives when we’re properly ENTRUSTED in Christ. Trust is primary. Love flows from trust.

Trust can be a sensitive thing. As believers, where we put our trust will determine the health of our relationship with God and man. Trust is where we decide to tie ourselves. Trust is an anchor of safety. Trust is a place of rest and peace. Trust is where we receive our strength. Trust is where we’re rooted. Trust is where we grow. And man cannot provide any of those things, only God can.

Trust itself is neither moral nor immoral, right nor wrong, healthy nor unhealthy, rather it’s WHERE we put our trust that is. Knowing how to properly do that can be difficult. For a healthy spiritual life, we must ONLY place our trust in Christ and in Him alone. By doing this doesn’t mean that we exclude people from our lives. On the contrary, we need people in and around us. We’re called to be connected in relationship. Having people in our lives is vital to who we are. Identifying the difference between trust and friendship is essential. Trust is one thing; relationships are another.

John 2:24-25 says…

But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. 25 He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.

Although Jesus loved everyone, He learned not to entrust himself to anyone except His Father. Love and trust are two totally different things. We’re not supposed to discriminate as to where we give our love, but we sure better discriminate as to where we put our trust. Our trust must be in God alone because of the imperfection of humanity. In order for trust to be effective, it must be put in a person that is far superior and without fault or error, and that will only be in Christ.
